Does the trip switch actually turn off when lightning strikes? Is the trip switch designed to withstand lightning? This is about it

Do you know about leak circuit breakers?

Leak circuit breaker! What a weird gadget. This is what you call a trip switch. But this is not the real name of the trip switch. It's a name our people have adopted. The correct name for this is RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker Devices).

With bucks coming and going, we thought we'd give you a little idea of the trip switch. It is a lie to say that the trip will be off due to lightning. As you read this article, you will understand why this is not the case. In fact, with this device, electricity can pass through our body and disconnect even if it leaks to the ground. But in order to disconnect, a capacity of about 30Am has to be leaked. (The average current that a human can withstand is 30Am) In addition, this device only shuts off in the event of a current leak.

Now you may be wondering if I said this will not turn off when lightning strikes but our house will turn off as soon as lightning strikes. This is how it happens.

When lightning strikes, an electromagnetic field is created in the surrounding environment. Due to that field currents are induced in each part of our household electrical circuit. So when this inductive current flows to the current supplied by the CEB (Ceylon Electric Board) a voltage unbalance occurs. This is because of the voltage unbalance and the RCCB turns off when lightning strikes.

Some people have RCCBs so they use electrical appliances without much care in case of lightning. It's completely wrong and we can not say for sure whether this RCCB will turn off before the lightning strikes or off after the lightning strikes. However, even if lightning strikes and the RCCB is off, lightning can cause current to flow out of a substandard switch board and damage your electrical equipment. The best thing to do is not to use the cheap inferior products available in the market. It is also advisable to unplug all available electrical appliances.
